(no subject)

Happy day to everyone who's not Irish, but wants to be. My Dad called to wish me a happy st. pat's, since he's the Irish side. Apparently, in Ireland, today's a religious holiday and is pretty quiet.

We left the office for a little bit and went down to watch the parade.
I'm not feeling cynical, but just honest when I say I like the real Ireland a lot more than what everyone in the States thinks it is or wants it to be or makes it for themselves for this one day, which kind of seems like a big green frat party.

I should scan the cheesy picture of myself I made my Dad take when we were there, standing with my (completely conincidentally) bright green hair and a silly grin in front of the "leprechaun crossing" sign. That would be goofy.

I have no plans tonight. I think I will save up my boozin' for echo's birthday bash this weekend.

Also-
Happy Birthday to nixon. You're sweet.

The American perception/stereotyping of Ireland is TERRIBLE. Cringe-worthy, really. I fucking love Ireland too (I almost moved to Dublin a few years ago.)

Though really, all of our stereotypes are cringe-worthy. Can't handle it.

I think its important to draw a distinction between "Irish" culture and "Irish American" culture. There are also, for example, "italian american" and "mexican american" cultures, distinct from the home country. No one in Italy eats chicken parmegian, no one in Mexico drives a low rider, and no one in Ireland drinks green beer on St. Patrick's day. From what I gather, the "Brits out of Ireland" sentiment is much stronger among Irish Americans than it is among native Irish, and its in America that the IRA does the majority of its fund raising (on St. Patrick's day, no less).

I haven't been to an irish bar or heard irish music since moving to DC, which is fine with me. You can only hear "the wild rover" so many times and still want to listen to it.
