Set it up, dj.
Good day yesterday.
I got some good work done at work. Because our board secretary doesn't show up to many board meetings (citing such petty reasons as being on theatrical tours in Japan and stuff) and the president is tired of taking the minutes in her stead, the job has been passed along to me. When I informed her that I didn't mind doing it, I thought she might get up and do a little dance of joy right there. I smiled and told her not to look that relieved in front of me. I appreciate having not only a staff but a board of directors who have a sense of humor... So, anyway, I wrote out my first-ever board meeting minutes. It took a surprisingly long time. I imagine I'll get faster as I do them more. Unfortunately, this means I have to pay a lot more attention during meetings. I've also been appointed to the finance committee. While I understand the reasons for me to be there (I do the day-to-day bookkeeping and invoicing) boy, it feels weird to be named as part of a finance committee.
I can't believe it was the last yoga session again. That means star5 and I have been yoga-ing it up for three months. We both want to keep going. We seemed to have taken on the tenuous honor of being two of the more flexible people in the class, which is surprising for me, anyway. I managed to do one new stretchy thing all the way! I feel stupidly accomplished for happening to be naturally flexible in at least one direction.
And then star5 was in a playing-with-records mood, and showed me the basics of beatmatching. I think after much futzing, I got "successful" mixes maybe twice. Compared to things I already knew more about, I'd have to relate the mechanics of beatmatching to a hybrid of tuning an instrument (which is actually beatmatching in and of itself of a slightly different kind), and spinning poi, which is also a rhythm-centered muscle-memory skillset. Each revolution of poi is actually called a beat, which makes a lot of sense, especially when you spin poi to music. I'm not sure if it's more or less frustrating to have an extensive music background and be able to know academically exactly how stuff should be working and not have the muscle memory and repetitive practice needed to build up a skill, or just start from scratch. (hah hah hah, "scratch")
At any rate, it made me less afraid of records and gave me a greater understanding of what stuff's all about. Neat. I don't think I'll be running out and buying turntables this week or anything, but... I feel more edumacated. Now if noise tells me how cd players work, I'll be a supergenius!
Okay, not really.
Yay, sunshiney.
I should Do Some Stuff, now.
