stereo total
Nov. 22nd, 2002 09:16 amWent to a really fantastic show at the entry last night. Stereo Total, who is a supersuper cute synthpop outift that's half french and half german was playing with Ms. Pussycat and Mr. Quintron from New Orleans, and one very boistrous guy in very shortshort soccer shorts who called himself (I think) Honey Toof or something. I thought it was Honeychrurch, but then I saw a set list from far away and realized it was something different. Anyway, they were all super amusing in their own way. Mr. Guy in supershort soccer shorts was also dressed in a yellow vinyl belt and a very small and very tight striped pastel sleeveless-midriff angora sweater. He had a laptop and a lot of energy and sang songs like "We Like to Fuck" with a lot of audience participation. The mood and demeanor of this guy reminded me a lot of seeing Khan with Julee Cruise last year, though I don't know that that comparasin will help anyone but Star5. I also felt like Danger and Bleep were missing something they'd have likely enjoyed...
Mr. Quintron and Ms. Pussycat had the stage monopolized with their strange and wonderful assortment of gear and a large red and white puppet show theatre covered like a parade float. Mr. Quinton had a large organ and a wonderful device of his own design called a Drum Buddy, which sounded like it probably had a lot of MOTM parts in it, with resonant filters hooked up to dimmer switches and lightbulbs; a turntable controller thing with a coffee-can over it (so light from the lightbulb hanging from the tubes could shine through the holes punched in it as it turned around on the turntable controller thing, of course.) The organ had a very modded Casio SK-1 on top of it with big toggle switches on it. Any band with a modded SK-1 is all right with me. He also had a hi-hat that he played while manipulating both the organ and the drum buddy with much proficiency. Mr. Quintron was a great one man show. Ms. Pussycat, on the other hand, seemed to hang out and watch him a lot, and yell along sometimes, and she had maracas that matched her dress and the set. It had a very B-52's quality to it. I decided afterwards that the 2 things that would have made me like them by at least 35% more would have been either playing a set about a third to a half shorter (organ all sounds the same after a while, even if there's a lot of other cool stuff) and having ms. pussycat do something besides hang out. I think I'm just extra sensitive to the "oh, I don't have to do any of the music or touch any of the buttons, there's a boy here to do that for me" vibe... but still. Oh. The puppet show was probably her biggest controbution, which was highly amusing and about a sewing machine on acid. Right. All in all, not dissapointing.
Stereo Total- soooooo cute. SEE THEM. Most of their set is done live, the cute french girl is oh-so-cute and geek-girl and she plays drums. Acoustic drums, live, while singing. Yay! Very refreshing after Ms. Pussycat. Her partner played most of the vintage synth stuff live as well. They played a very generous encore that almost became annoying because I was so tired from work and wanted to go home and sleep. A lot of the audience was on stage dancing with them at the end and it was all a lot of fun. Ear Candy was noted in the audience, too. Cool. It sucks... had I not been so tired I would have had even more fun at this show and as it was I had a great time, came home and slept the sleep of the dead.
