Today's Topic: Why I Like My Kitchen
Apr. 11th, 2003 09:24 amI like my kitchen.
It is all white, and while I usually find this a bland and annoying detail in all rental properties, in my kitchen it really does do what everyone says white should, that is, make it seem bigger and cleaner than it might be otherwise. It's big, even without any help from white paint, and is usually kept reasonably clean. Feeling more or less indebted to a roommate with a higher intolerance for clutter tends to keep s4 and I more watchful of the messes we create out of courtesy; I see this as a good thing. (Of the things a stint in the military can do to ones personality, a need to keep a house tidy probably ranks with the least offensive.)
It's sunny. The kitchen is the back of our apartment, and has two windows that face out behind to the alley. There's a view that I strangely enjoy from these windows. First is the patch of grass, on which this morning I saw a squirrel bouncing around, then our small, four-space parking lot, then the alley, then the old brick warehouse turned into art studios (where I'd really love to live) that include a glass blowing studio, and has a big, worn, partially legible sign that I imagine was fresh sometime around the 1920's or so that said ALUMINUM-BRONZE-BRASS on the side in large letters. We live in the shadow of a towering, white, still very operational flour mill, right on well-used train tracks. Many days it smells like wheat.
I also find that waking up earlier in the morning and having enough time to make some tea without rushing helps my mood much more than an extra 20-25 minutes of sleep would. I'd like to try to make myself get up earlier, and see what else I could get done, but so far I haven't been able to make it.
Time for work...
