Have I mentioned lately...

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate MIDI?

So.

Much.

Hate.

but how do you really feel?

Yeah, it's pretty dumb and archaic. Why hasn't something better been invented and universally adopted?

Something better has been invented (OSC, I think, but I don't know what that really is).

Why not universally adopted? Musicians are suckers, I think.

Ding-dang-doodle, I've designed MIDI hardware, written software for MTC and Midi Show Control... there are worse things.

Its a 1982 spec. It was even a pretty decent spec -- in 1982. There are better specs, but they're proprietary. Yamaha has a cool thing called MLAN which is a superset of firewire that'll carry MIDI, timing, audio and power all over the same connection, but hey, guess what -- Yamaha owns it, and none of the other manufacturers really want to give power to them. Surprise.

A couple of other specs have been proposed and have all failed for similar reasons. Since MIDI is entrenched, nobody's going to release a product without it.
