My shoulder/neck is doing that hurty thing again, just for bout day! Hooray. I'm not going to let it keep me from playing tonight, especially since it's likely I won't be in the game a ton as it is, and also, because of where I tend to play I'll give and recieve most hits on my other side, but *still*.

I'm mostly, if not completely, pain-free in a neutral pose, when I turn my head a lot either way it hurts, but once it gets where its going the pain stops.

I'm not used to sporty related pain. I'm not sure if this one is from derby or from yoga or from a nice combo... So, sporty people (molly?) what should I do to either make this better as soon as possible, or at least make it not worse? Rub it? Stretch it? Leave it alone? Ice it? Heat it? Put smelly sporty cream on it? Take an over the counter painkiller? Any combination of these things? My inclination is that it feels tight and wants to be heated and stretched, but I know those things can also make things worse.

Bleh.

Anyway. Still excited.

That would make sense if the plan was to get sick to your stomach during the bout and suffer a massive sugar/caffeine crash as the night wears on.

... hence the strained neck no doubt...

So it isn't a constant sort of pain. Does it feel like a sore muscle, or is it a sharper pain that seems to focus at one specific place?

The weird thing I've found with neck/shoulder sorenesses is that often the source of the pain isn't where you'd expect it to be. Usually I can track those things down to a really nasty knot more in the shoulder blade region.

Hmm. Yep, Monday night there was a big knot near my shoulder blade, post-yoga. It's much more a focused pain when I turn my head.

it sounds kind of like a pinched nerve; generally when that happens to me aI can stretch it out a little bit, but that only gives me a bit more range of movement before the pain kicks in; if you put yourself into the position that hurts you should be able to trace it with your fingers and will probably find a source for it down by your shoulderblade- massaging that will help; but mostly its a wait and let it fix itself kind of thing

by the way scratch the pinched nerve thing, that's just my generic name for it, but it isn't technically correct

Advil. Reduce activity for a few days. If it doesn't go away, see a Dr.

For simple muscle pain (this sounds a bit more complicated) try malic acid- there is a lot of it in pineapple juice and apple juice (my coach recommmended this to me back when I had a coach, and my bro used to take massive supplements of it from GNC, and they both claimed it helped- I found it minimal in effect, but I wasn't megadosing like my bro).

I've had neck-shoulder pain that pops up periodically for years now. Mine is the result of muscle spasms. There are two things I've found that really help. 1) A specific sort of massage (other types of massage don't really help, and sometimes make it worse) that is essentially deep pressure on certain trigger points. This doesn't make the pain go away, but turns it from sharp and almost unbearable to a much more subtle and mild ache. I usually go to a professional therapist, rather than trusting my untrained but well meaning friends/s.o.'s. 2) Recently a doctor I went to prescribed a low dose of prednisone for a muscle spasm and it knocked it out completely within hours of taking the first pill. Prednisone is much cheaper than a professional massage, so I'll probably go this route in the future. It is a steroid, though. I'm not sure it's considered an athletic steroid, but I'm also not sure what the rules of the Derby are about use of steroids.

This is not for the bout, but after, when you are going to sleep. I just got over a bout of bad back spasms and found it really hard to get to a comfortable position to sleep, but found that the smelly "icy hot" patches worked wonders. So when you're all tired and s4 has rubbed you up, slop one of those babies on and it will help you nod off (altho you may be so tired after your bout that it won't matter, but just in case) I've used the hot water bottle thing, too, but for sleeping those things are a little bulky. Kick ass on your bout, I wish I could be there!

those types of injuries i've been told to use ice to help reduce the swelling, and in some cases a mix of ibuprofen and naproxen to reduce pain and inflamation

you should chat with some of the other girls / coaches and get better recommendations tonight. also, take extra care to stretch your back and neck pre-bout.

oh and get some penalties so you can spend some minutes in the box with me. ;)

I've heard good things about both those icy-hot patches and the ibuprofen patches. Crrrrazy!

In other news:
Kick some ass tonight!

I say take some vicadin and a shot of jag. Then nothing will matter and you'll be kicking ass and feeling no pain. And why aren't you playing much ? I came to scream for a Killa!

Well, I still wanna be *upright*...

The teams are bigger this year, we don't have half the team out on injury like last year, I'm not a superstar player, *and* I'm new. I kick ass and everything, but I'm no Jawbreaker. (Yet. ;)) Everyone will get to play some, but I'm hardly expecting to be in all the time is all, especially if I'm hurty.
