if you think of a good way to do that with music, let me know, because i was thinking about trying something like that, too, but i couldn't figure a way to do it. also you should check out explodingdog.com if you haven't already.
there's a group--i think it's called "the lodge"--of people who started in portland and do something like that. basically you have 48 hours or 24 hours to record say, seven tracks, and you have to just bust them all out and completely finish them, and all the material has to be completely new. then all the people get together and share what they made and apparently in general this sort of thing attracts really cool people. a i understand it, the idea started in portland but i heard a while ago that there was one meeting in minneapolis. i'll try and find out.
I actually started thinking about how to do it... I used to do a written journal every day, and I have incorporated a lot of journal entries and similar stuff in my music before, so it seems a natural fit for me. I was thinking one way to incorporate it would be kind of in tandem with a journal... maybe recording audio of whatever you're thinking about right then, or write something and then use it, however you want, in a short musical sketch- try to capture a feeling in sound, or use a direct recording of an audio journal within a musical sketch or just a collage, or use something you wrote as a lyric or just a word or a phrase or something. It might also help to have a time-target, like making something certain number of seconds or minutes long.
ooh, that is a good idea. me likey the stuff you've made using journal entries (a lot.) are you still planning on coming to sf soon? because my soon-to-be-rommate brett (who you maybe met in minneapolis? long dreds?) and i are starting something of a music house...my plan is to get as many random gizmos and sound-making crap/recording gear/crazy fun things in there as possible, and then just have it set up so people can come over and make things, play music, etc. so you'll have to come over when we get it all set up; maybe we can circuitbend stuff or something. ! :)
one other thing i once tried to get myself out of a music funk was a long-distance tape project thing (kind of like what the postal service did.) one person records one track all the way through, and sends the tape to the other person, who records another track over it, etc, until we think it's done. and since the other person is always waiting impatiently for you to send the tape (or CD or files or whatever) back to them, you can't spend too long debating what you want to add, which is nice.
