Dear Resident: This letter is to inform you that the building you reside in has been sold... New Ownership will be converting the buildings to condominiums later this year.

Well, fuck. We liked it here.

We could try to buy it, but the weirdnesses here make us unsure that we'd want to be tied to it, and the glut of similar projects happening all over the twin cities seem to insure that it wouldn't be easily resellable. And even if it was perfect and we wanted to buy it, and we could afford it, we'd be displaced during conversion anyway.

So, we don't know when we're kicked out, the letter was a form letter and purposely vague. But I guess we're moving this summer.

Too bad, how much longer do you have left on your lease?

And you can always rent out condos if you don't want to live there anymore!

Our lease was up in December so we're on a month-to-month. I think they legally have to give us 60 days notice, but I don't know.

I'll tell my brother, but I think he's asking $1000+ for the downstairs unit. Choose what's good for you; he needs to get the damn thing on the market anyway...

PS: I flipflopped, and decided I'd rather do yoga than pattern class. So I'm gonna re-up Monday.

Oh, geez. I'm sorry, your place is awesome, it's sad to see you two forced into moving. This condo renovation crap is entirely too pervasive. :(

Take Luck, and hopefully you'll find a comparable or even better place nearby...

Hello. As a cute and defenseless little rodent I spend my time traveling from house to house in little rodent passages and so I just happen to know about a house with huge columns on Pillsbury Ave not far from the Spyhouse with immediate openings that would be just perfect for you! Or perhaps could go live in London for a year. So many opportunities!
Also I am sick of condos condos condos condos. Are these things actually going to be as popular as they seem to make them out to be? I predict that lots of no-family suburban-types will come buy them then, in a few years, realize that it sucks, sell them and move back to Edina.

Anyway. I may just be a small rodent with adorable whiskers but I will help you with the inevitible moving (again). I am DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON Rodent. I am a moving mouse. Okay. Goodbye.

What an odd building to make into condominiums. It has lots of character, which is a big plus. But then it has even more character than that, which is a bit of a minus, and then more character just keeps piling on. I think they'll have to gut the electrical system. That's expensive. Repaint everything. Cheapish. I would think they would want the entrances to be more normal, but that's maybe not necessary. I wonder if the floor plans will be left intact? Are people willing to buy an entirely open space? Don't you have a huge brick wall, and isn't it icy cold in the winter? I guess they could insulate and sheetrock all exposed brick walls, but that would be a visual shame.

Yeah, stupid. Stupid housing development. If they do it, I give it a maximum of five years before it turns into rental units again, except smaller, and without character.

I'm sorry. What a bother.

Gosh, that sucks. I don't know why this is happening all over (its happening big time around here too). I think condos are a scam. You still have to pay monies to a 'homeowners association' (read, former landlords) in addition to having the major responsibility for the home and all its peskiness. Scam!!

To echo the others, that sucks. Last week I just read a big article in the City Pages about the condo explosion in Minneapolis. (Obviously St. Paul isn't immune) I'm all for "owning is better then renting" but it sounds like the materials used were sub-par and all just cosmetic. Someone renting a place for $700 a month then seeing eventually on the market for $220,00 after being kicked out is just "ouch"
I've considered buying a condo, but those association fees suck..

Here, here. I will also add that 185,000 is way, way too much to spend on what amounts to a 750 square foot apartment.

I wonder how long it will be before we all more into North Minneapolis and Frogtown.

thats exactly what happened to us! except we lived in a little 4-plex in uptown. we loved loved loved our apartment, and i was so mad about that. i sort of still am, and it was 2 years ago. we also had the option to buy. a mere $169,000 for our small one bedroom apartment! what a bargain! *snort*
so.
i feel your pain.

Wow, that sucks! I hope you find a new place as nice as your current digs (she says, ironically, owning a condo in Minneapolis).

THAT FUCKING SUCKS. I have some apartment resource information here (http://heavyboots.org/opinions/moving.htm) if that will help.
