Back to work

Wow, what a long weekend.

Everything we own except our bicycles is in the new place. It took longer than I expected, but then, I guess moving always does. The new place is already shaping up really well, we have the skeletons of the sections of our one big room - bedroom section, kitchen section, living room section, and our two work spaces. Moving always makes me want to throw away half of whatever I own, the weird thing is that this move really does seem to be making good on it for us. We gave a bunch of our old clothes to our neighbor for a garage sale, we threw away ratty towels that we hate, we threw away the toaster that only sorta kinda worked, same with the microwave, we threw away the chairs with the piece that always fell off, we threw out the lamps we don't like and cables that don't go with any electronics we own anymore. When we can afford it, we're going to throw out our 35 year old couch and get a new one. I'm going to get a desk and a dresser that aren't the same ones I've had since I was ten years old. I hate getting rid of functional things, but they've had a good long life of usefulness.

We love the new place. It's big and sunny and clean. The old place, while it was a cool space that we liked a lot, had only one window, and it had 100 years of dust and grit that just kind of fell out of the ceiling and walls. Mysterious piles of debris and sand would appear out of nowhere; our sheets were often gritty and the plants were starved for sun. I can take baths again. We now have consistent water temperature and reasonable outlet placements. Ah, the little things...

Called to get the DSL switched, but they can't do it until Thursday. S4 will be annoyed, I bet, but it will probably make us less prone to distraction. :)

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to everyone who helped us, including but not limited to:
pied_piper70, omaha, star5, dangerdhotrod, dave, briyarrose, yaaren, and djnoise.
(sorry if I forgot any lj folks...) Apologies also to spun_lepton, I got the message but never called back. In my wild and crazy optimism, I thought we'd be done before you could get there. Many of you did not stick around for us to buy you thank-you beer and snacks. We're still good for some thank you beer and snacks.

All right. I should get some work done...
