IKEA is cheap! And never quite right.

S4 and I went shopping yesterday.

We decided to stop by IKEA to get some house things. Mainly, we need curtains. We have two huge windows and they stare directly into other people's windows. Knowing this neighborhood, it's likely that I know the people who studio there, too. This is something of an impediment to, say, wandering around naked searching for pants. (I've spent more time than I care to admit wandering around and looking for pants. I'm blaming this on the fact that I had lots of help packing up clothes. Super awesome, except I'm not really sure where a lot of them ended up. I've worn the same pants for too many days in a row, now...)

Anyway, we went to IKEA. We got there with very little time left before they closed. We thought we could do it. We had a mission. We wanted curtains. And maybe a shelf. And maybe to look at kitchen island-type things. You know, just quick...

Our windows are huge. This is really cool, of course, except for a few things. They're not a standard size, so regular curtains don't fit. IKEA curtains are all too wide or too narrow or too short.

We started realizing a theme about pretty much everything at IKEA. It's all really really cool... almost. "Oh, I love this. Except..." "Oh, if this was a little longer..." "Well... that... might work. Maybe." "Does it only work with *those* jars? I like the rack thingy but I hate those jars... Oh! I like these jars! Do these fit? No. Too little. Shit." "Would that fit in the bathroom? ...not really..."

We ended up realizing that the three or four things we put in our big yellow bag we didn't actually like enough to commit to purchasing. We left. Since we don't have internet at home yet, we decided to get something to eat someplace with wireless so we could look around more online. Then the wireless didn't really work, so our shopping for the evening was pretty much a wash.

Oh well.

S4 said that at least he got to yell at Oliver, and that helped make the evening worthwhile.

thats why ya gotta make your own stuff!

I know, we thought of that. But then I have to go look at fabric, and pick it out. And then measure it, and cut it out, and find where my sewing crap ended up, and sew it. And none of that is helping me wander around naked looking for pants any sooner. ;)

I have a whole lot of velvet I need to get rid of. What are the mesurmens of your windows?

I am amazed that Ikea curtains would be too short! Most of the ones we purchased made rather large curtain puddles on the floor. I cut them off and made other curtains out of them!!

But that is definitely the deal with Ikea. You can get it cheap, sure, but you have to be flexible. Sometimes it's totally worth it and sometimes it's not.

The regular curtains probably would work... we were looking more at roman shades and rice paper thingies.

I highly recommend the "as-is" area. Especially since, in your new place, you might have access to wood fabrication tools, and they sell lots of nice planed, finished single hardwood pieces for $0.50.
