We're having doubts about the new dome. It has become a pricier and more time consuming endeavor than it was meant to be. It's kinda my fault, ever since I uttered "you know, we could make it [in such a way that it looks cooler but takes twice as much work]..." Really, it's the fault of our bigass tent, since the whole idea was to cover our tent. We kinda forgot how big our tent actually is until after we'd bought a bunch of supplies to build the thing that's supposedly covering it. Hmm.
For S4's part, the battery died on the drill, plus the flattened parts of the conduit might not be long enough, plus we're worried that skimping and going with a riskier combo of both thinner conduit and longer struts was too much compromising. For my part, I made a really stupid math error that's caused me to need to re-sew seams on almost all of the panels for the covering, plus it made me eat through fabric sooner than I ought to have. I probably still would have come up short, but now I came up really short. D'oh. Back to Harris it is. Oh well. Too small would have been a lot worse; plus double seams never hurt anyone. Thanks to the closeout shelf at Sears our household is now outfitted with both a corded and cordless drill. Whee.
On the other hand, I'm still excited about it, setbacks and all, and trying to think about what these experiences have taught me. I think the big one right now is not to do long division in haste. And perhaps to look before you leap. Or, uh, set up your tent before you build a shade structure for it. And also maybe that one should bring along a square-root capable calculator to the fabric store.
Only time will tell if S4's a domewrecker this year or not.

Date: 2006-08-18 04:33 pm (UTC)have someone else do this as well. and hell, maybe a third to re-check it just to be safe. if anyone disagrees then something is wrong.
this is why i'm interested in building things 'organically', because math is hard, and it seems like whenever i try to use math i always have problems.

Date: 2006-08-18 05:03 pm (UTC)i haven't needed the square root yet, but time will tell.
i never thought i'd see the day where i was calculator shopping, looking for the pi key. it totally ruined all my street cred, dammit.
