I am waiting for a number of things to arrive in the mail right now, which is exciting. I rarely shop and I like getting things in the mail. (I like to spend my money on experiences more than things, in general.) Since I decided not to buy a replacement car and I got my tax return, I'm justifying getting a few odd things for myself that I wouldn't likely bother to get otherwise.

New Phone: Verizon bought another 2 years of my loyalty in exchange for a cute new phone, so, no actual money is being exchanged for this. It's red, and has a cool slidey form factor, and plays music and has a camera on it and stuff. I've never had a phone with so many bells and whistles, so this might be fun. I don't ask a lot of my phone and I was happy with the one that I had until I dropped it and the hinge went funky. So, new phone it is.

Speaker stands: I went ahead and bought myself some speaker stands off the internets. I got some that aren't quite as heavy-duty (or expensive) as the ones I posted about since they're for small monitors that probably won't leave my house or be used for anything much bigger. I've wanted something like this for years so it's nice to finally make good on it.

Jam skate instructional videos. This is sure to be hilarious. This was a completely frivolous purchase which I only rationalize by having a good chunk of my derby team interested in learning with me. Soon, we will kick it, yo. If anyone else is interested in learning how to jam skate with me, lemme know. I have a hardwood floor and a downstairs neighbor that's gone a lot. Plus I have an extra pair of skates, if you have big feets like me.

Planner/goal setting book thingy specifically for creative people. I talked myself into this one. It seems expensive for what it is and kind of, well, cheesy, but I thought I'd see if it was worth it. I've never used a 'personal planner' type thing of any kind. But, I wouldn't get through my workday without a hastily scrawled to-do list that I revise every few minutes, so I thought I'd see if something like this might help me work on getting my creative thoughts and goals more organized, too. It says I can have my money back if I don't like it, plus I figure I can be a test audience for my job. My rationale is thus: time is like money- the less of it you have, the more aware you need to be of how you're spending it and why. I like to do lots of stuff, and juggling it sucessfully gets hard. More ideas about how to spend my time well so I can have all the things I want or need (my job; to make progress creatively; to maintain good relationships with my boyfriend, friends, and family; play roller derby; run a convention, have time to myself so I don't go crazy, etc, etc, etc...), or figure out what my priorities are as opposed to what they should be or could be can't be a bad thing.

I'm jealous of people who can successfully use date-books. I keep a work calendar and I keep the odd personal item on there, but man, I just get to resent it sooooo quickly. "Why are you telling me to do this. You're just a box. On a screen/page. Grr." Unfortunately, this kinda makes me dumb. I've been actually trying lately, but its just really contrary to my temperament.

Sigh someday I'll get a good creative space again. Yay for you on teh speakerstands.

I'm less aggressive with scheduling...However, I tend to be much more PASSIVE aggressive with my schedule: "Oh, I'm sorry...Was I supposed to do such-and-such at such-and-such a time? Oh, that's too bad...I was...doing something else..."

I'll be curious to hear about the planner-for-creative-types. I'm always trying to find a better way to keep all these balls in the air!

i am interested in your jam skating fun. everytime i go to derby i get a longing longing feeling that makes me want to be back at the heartthrob cafe or some other rolly-friendly place.

while i have quad street hockey skates, they are slowly falling apart (because they are almost thiry years old and greatly damaged by the heartthrob kitchen grease) and i might like to indulge in yours if such fun were to be had (my feets are mens 8 and a half or women's 10).

also, i have skating on the brain because ziad and i just bought new rollerblades. i have already told him that the rollerblading will make me pouty for its lack of toe-stops.

That is exactly the size of my feet! When jam skateyness happens, they are yours to wear. They were my derby skates for the first season and still have lots of wear in them. Now they are my outdoor/take to Burning Man skates.
I haven't tried blades in years but I think they'd be really weird, now. I find I use my toe stops rarely and almost never for stopping- mostly just sprint starts.

toe stops are never for stopping. they are for climbing stairs, performing dances, and getting up speed-for-launch!
i wish i had outdoor skates! I am happy to share my footsize with my fellow skate-owner instead.

I'm interested to know more about the goal book for creative folks...care to provide a name (and possible a review once you get it?).

Jam skating - I'm all for that!

The goal book is called 'The Whole-Brain Goal Planner" by Lee Silber. He's written a bunch of books and does consulting with artists to help them with their creative careers, which is also what we do at my nonprofit. We've used some of his articles and ideas in a couple of our workshops. His big deal is the differences between more right-brained and more left-brained people and how that effects how one lives/works/gets stuff done, essentially.
