So, (ha, ilex is rubbing off on me...)

I'm poking around for a replacement for the firepod, but everything I find that makes me go "oooh, heeeeey!" seems to get more and more expensive. Damnit. I just can't justify $700 for a mixer/interface, at least right now. I was pretty cool with ~$400, and then all these nifty more expensive options start cropping up. I mean, I'm okay with paying more for something I know I'm going to like that's going to make my setup easier, but... almost double? Quit it, internet!

Right now my top contenders are the Mackie Onyx 1220 or the M-Audio NRV-10.
I really adore Mackies, but... making a firewire mixer and forcing people to pay an extra $400 for the firewire card separately? LAME, Mackie. I guess I can see that being kinda neat if you really liked your mixer but just wanted to upgrade to more channels or something, but... no, nevermind, it's still lame. I also found
Remix's review of the NRV-10 that blows a big hole in the Onyx in its opening paragraph. Realistically, that's probably not a dealbreaker for me, but it is food for thought; it also discusses points on the NRV that cause it to bridge really well between live performance and the studio, and they might as well be speaking directly to me in that regard.

Anyway, I'm probably gonna hold off on buying anything for a while yet, now. I'm kinda gun shy after my audio interface impulse buy gone a bit awry. If/when I get something else, I want it to be the right thing.
Plus, I've got con and travelling coming this summer, and I might yet be able to pull off putting out a cd this summer, to boot, but not if I spend all my money on gear first.
