Had a very lovely weekend that managed the correct mix of going out, traveling, relaxing, and productive-at-home-time. I love when that happens! I'm sorry I missed paraselenic's derby fantasticals, though.

People on my flist keep talking about laptops. It makes me think about getting a shiny macbook pro. My current lappy is turning... 3 this year? I really don't remember. But now that I'm using some pretty processor-heavy software it's making me think about upgrading. Unfortunately, I can't afford it. Well, I might be able to afford it, but there are other things I'd rather do with a pile of money first, which is kind of the same thing. No matter, I still love my little shiny G4.

The holidays are going to come careening down on me when I'm not looking. I mean, crap, it's November this week. When the hell did that happen? This also means I turn 30 pretty soon, which, while not a huge deal, does kinda have that gettin' old feel to it. I'm looking forward to seeing figment and azure for Thanksgiving.

S4 and I have been excited about the steampunk style of late, and joined a steamfashion community on the ye olde lj. I'm just about over it. I think about three more posts that consist of nothing but a) people looking to sell their uninteresting (to me) jewelry made of watch gears on their etsy page, b)recovering goths feeling all excited about their new interest in earth tones (okay, okay, I kind of resemble this remark) or c) gothic lolitas excited about their new justification for corset expenditures, and I'll take it off my f-list. Nothing against these things, really, but 10-15 of them a day is getting boring. (This recent post of hilarity does give me pause, though.)

My other most recent favorite bit of funny I found on the internets is this.

Okay. Back to work!

We made steamy outfits for Burning Man this year; it was fun! I don't have any pictures that really show them off, though. :(

if you don't care for the whole steampunk community, consider just reading the journal of [livejournal.com profile] labricoleuse.

seems like I haven't seen you forever. I hope you make it to vaxjo's party!

as mush as i'd like a MBpro, i've been more noticing that the used prices of 17" PBs have *really come down lately.. [like, just under a grand for the 1.5ghz models]

I love your recovering goths theory! Heh!
I OD'd on that community as well. There's only so many inquiries one can read about goggles. It got old fast..sad to say. I still love the notion, but I feel the same way you do

Don't be silly. Goths don't die. They either recover, or become "Not a goths." Goth is like the cockroach of subcultures. It will always be there, the eternal sock hop with black eye liner.

Do no goths become streamlined utilitarians? Perhaps that is for ex-poseur-goths.

Steam punk has been getting on my nerves a lot lately too. I'm so sick of every single project being "glue some brass gears onto the side of something else and have everyone tell you how cool you are". Clockwork is cool because it's a really complicated system but you can watch it work. Gluing gears is not complicated and just sits there.

I wasn't sure what about the watch-gear-gluing bugged me so much, but I think that's exactly it!

Random LJ hopping

Hope this isn't out of order, but i was hopping around friends lists at random and thought if you like steampunk you might prefer this site, more about people making and doing some really neat things with the idea.

Not at all, hello and thanks!
yay for brassgoggles! It was one of the first sites that got us into the aesthetic, I think via boingboing.
I don't mean to be too disparaging, there's nice folks and some cool ideas over on steamfashion... just... kind of a lot of stuff to sift through.
Have you seen this one?

I did this a few weeks ago. Other than the household toxic waste it leaves in its wake, it's pretty awesome.

Those are really cool, i'd love to do some stuff like that, but i have five house rabbits and i worry about any chemicals that could harm them. So most of my handiwork ends up being fabrics and things like that.

Should have figured most people knew of Brassgoggles, i found it through boingboing also. If i ever get good enough at doing things like that, i'm going to make myself a computer like in Brazil, even though it's not really steampunk, it would be fun.

Bwhaha on that Craigslist posting.

I'd be more excited about steampunk if anyone'd come up with a babbage-style solar synthesizer yet. But they ain't, to my knowledge.

I'm still running my 1 ghz AMD with 512megs and win2k. It was 1.4ghz, but the bios has been underclocking itself lately, so I suspect that its slowly dying. I have a 1.5ghz chip to put in it when I'm unlazy enough to get out the thermal compound. I ask the box to spool lots of audio, but I've offloaded most of the math on the hardware stuff. It takes more power and is less portable, but will probably hold its value (slightly) better than new computing. On the other hand, if you're going towards Max/MSP, you're going to want the cycles and room in a big bad way. I would suggest that last year's model of computer holds its value slightly better than this year's, without sacrificing too much power.

I agree about the steam punk community. I joined in as an athropological thing "let us understand this strange new subculture" but its a bit silly. I like the sewing links though, and the booooooots which I can't afford (though I'm getting a wee bit tired of watching a bunch of LJ communities that seem to revolve around buying stuff or at least consuming stuff- makes me feel po')

I heart me some steampunk, but I do get pretty irritated at most of the communities about it. I tend to sift through them when I'm really* bored or just go looking for stuff on my own. Although I'm less into the fashion end of it, and more into the crafty side. I like that it's really DIY-heavy.
