I want:
A height-adjustable, folding (or otherwise portable) table with dimensions somewhere around 20"x 36" (there is wiggle room here). It needs to be able to be taller than a normal table, so I can put my laptop and some other various music gear on it when I play live and not spend my entire set hunching over. I *could* do the put-a-board-on-top-of-a-keyboard-stand, but I'd really rather have something more stable and less klugey.

Help me, internet! Music gear places seem to have a stand for absolutely everything, but I have found nothing like this.

Edited to add:

Grrr! SO CLOSE. This is *exactly* what I want, but 10" higher. http://www.buylifetime.com/detail.aspx?ID=312

I had this same need a while back and found nothing suitable. We ended up making a platform for me that raises my gear up about 10 inches.

It can fit on any table-top and I got to decorate it all purty. It has rack mounts on the inside with a power conditioner and room for an amp when I get one.

I wish you the best of luck with this. My husband and I searched everywhere for something of a reasonable height for his studio, and we weren't even looking for portable.

Maybe see if you can procure 2 of these (http://cgi.ebay.com/HONEY-Portable-Rolling-Bedside-Adjustable-Laptop-Table_W0QQitemZ360022620897QQihZ023QQcategoryZ20471QQcmdZViewItem)?

I have a drafting table that I could get rid of. It's larger than you want, but...

I was going to suggest a drafting table, they're usually very* adjustable, as far as height, angle, et cetera, and you might be able to screw in little braces for your equipment (to keep it from sliding and stuff).

They come in a variety of sizes, weights, and adjustabilities, too.

mebbe, this'll do:

Overall Dimensions: 27 1/2" - 48 3/4"H x 27 1/2"W x 25 3/4"D
Height adjustable from 27 1/2" to 48 3/4"
Folds to a compact 4 1/2" width.
Weight: 42 lbs

the above link's the manufacturer, this store site lists it for $109 shipped [i've seen it listed for $90 elsewhere, but shipping an additional ~$30]..

My massage table is just like that - adjustable height, about 3'x6', folds in half so you can carry it.

Lots of good suggestions here... have you checked out IKEA Hacker or instructables?

Your request reminded me that, with a bit of ingenuity, random ikea stuff from craigslist can be hacked into darn near anything.

Here's the hack i was reminded of - not really what you want, but an interesting solution that might generate some ideas: IKEA DJ Console

This one is 24" x 48", 28lbs, adjustable up to 36" in height:

If you want to spend money, this one is amazing! 24" x 48", 32-40" in height, built like a brick:

In general, you might want to look for athletic taping tables.
