Does anyone know anything about document destruction services? With the remodel, we're getting rid of a lot of dead weight- financial files and some with personal information that, even though they're well past 7 years old and we have no need to keep permanently, I'd still want to have shredded before they're recycled.

How much does it cost? How meticulously do I have to comb through to remove things like paperclips or hanging files with metal bits in? I don't have a totally accurate count of how much we need to have destroyed- at a ballpark, around 10 bankers boxes full, maybe? Maybe more, maybe a bit less? I need to take a lot of stuff out of big 3 ring binders first, that will help my estimate.

Most of the large corperations I've worked for use Iron Mountain: http://www.ironmountain.com/index.asp. I have no idea how much they cost and if they do one time jobs. I don't know if they do 3 ring binders, but I think that they shread most everything else. I couldn't find prices for you on their website, they only had someone to email about it in sales - so I leave that to you if you so desire.

hennepin county and, i believe, the state also uses iron mountain.

i, too, don't know how much it costs, but i expect it's rather expensive.

[expensive enough that you'd likely be better off buying a good shredder. good shredders are, ofc, also expensive. federal sites i've visited often seem to use mbm shredders, this one might fit your needs: http://www.buy-destroyit-shredders.com/destroyit-shredder.php?productID=100 ]

at the university medical school we use shred-it:
http://www.shred-it.com/

they're fast and cheap-- but that cost may be due to the large contract that we have with them, I'm not sure. If anything, maybe you can get iron mountain and shred it in a bidding war for your 5 measly boxes of stuff....
