So, when my motorcycle got impounded, I had this thought of "Hey, at least they didn't give me a ticket for not having my new tab on there!" ( It was helpfully attached to my fridge with a magnet at the time). Today I got a notice of how I haven't paid my citation for vehicle registration violation, even though I never got a copy of the ticket- I imagine it didn't stay attached to the bike. Or maybe it fell off during the tow to the impound lot. Gaaah. Gotta schedule a hearing to contest it. Never done that, should be exciting. Or not.

What do I need to prove that it was registered, and just didn't have the tab on there? Shouldn't they have a record, or should I dig up a copy of the check I used to pay it, or what?

ETA: The earliest I could get in for a hearing is January 21st. Onwards, to adventure!

If you have evidence, like a canceled check, or a receipt, you should totally dig it out and bring it with you!!! Do not rely upon their records to make your case.

I think you can print out your registration from the state website.

Do not depend on their record if you don't have to. Bring in your canceled check, receipt, bank statement, whatever.

Depending who you get in the hearing, you might just have to tell your story. That happened to me once, even though I was prepared with evidence. Just bring what you have and explain nicely what happened. Hopefully the person will be good. Also go early in the day before they get crabby because of dealing with dolts all day. It's worked for me...

Yep, I think I had brought in my tabs with the receipt attached when this happened to me, and they reduced the fine I had to pay to just the regular fine. I had gotten three tickets in a three day period, but hadn't noticed them because my car was merely parked on the street.

Is the ticket for failure to renew tabs or for failure to display current tabs? Because they might reduce it but they won't make it go away, because even if you have the tabs and don't have them on it's technically a valid ticket. I got a ticket with my tabs in my car, just not stuck on the thing yet! If you are going to miss work it's probably cheaper to just pay the ticket.

Yeah, I'm afraid of that, but I'm not really sure since I never saw the original ticket. I think it just says "registration violation" on my notice. At the very least I'm hoping to knock down the late fees, 'cause I can't pay something I never got. I don't know if it makes a difference that I clearly never *drove* it anywhere or not; probably not. The weird thing is that my other ticket- the parking ticket- I got in the mail. At first I thought it was a mistake since I paid that one right away.
