Weekend in Wisconsin

This weekend S4 and I headed out across America's Dairyland for some derby.
Milwaukee, to be precise.
Our traveling buddies were Scarmen Hellectra and Fanboy Steve/H¨sker St¨, who were kind enough to drive.
(hmm, I seem to have umlaut difficulty...)
We left early in the morning so's to have enough time to grab lunch at the notorious SafeHouse and give Stu enough time to get to the bout venue to warm up.
The SafeHouse was neat, but a bit of a letdown after hearing about how cool it was for so long. It could have easily been more cool-secret-library and less TGI Fridays. It was also done up in gaudy green decorations for St. Patty's Day, which kind of ruined the whole secret agent vibe, though our mood was also colored by poor service. Even so, it's neat, I'm glad I've seen it, but I don't feel a pressing need to return anytime soon.
We also stopped at Carr Valley to sample and buy a lot of delicious cheese. We mowed down a good number of ever-so-squeaky-fresh cheddar curds during the rest of our drive, and stocked up on some other goodies for later. Mmmm, aged gouda.
The men's derby league, the TC Terrors, was playing a short exhibition bout as a halftime show for Milwaukee's Brew City Bruisers. I'd never seen the Bruisers play, but our travel teams are matching up for the East Coast Extravaganza in Philly in June. This was a home season game, but I wish they'd indicated their all star roster in the program somewhere, though, as I'm curious who we'll be up against.
It was totally worth going to watch the dudes play, for all 14 minutes they got. The rules are the same but the game is so stylistically different when guys play: there's more play with upper body and less booty, and it's a little crazier and less strategic (at least for now.) It will be interesting to watch things evolve.
Stu made quite the impression in his teal tights and booty shorts.
Milwaukee puts on a good bout. Lot of folks showed up from all over, which was cool- girls from a newer Paper Valley league (Appleton and round about) were there representing, so were almost a whole home team from the Mad Rollin' Dolls to support their former teammate who's a recent transfer to Brew City. There were the MNRG who came down with the dudes, and of course the Terrors. Val Capone was up from Windy City and did a great job announcing.
Regional derby is always a good reminder of how freakin' spoiled MNRG is to skate in the Roy, though.
+ Dudes playing derby!
+ Wisconsin cheese!
+ Spotted Cow!
+ Curry Fries!
+ Phenomenal veggie breakfast at Riverwest co-op
+ Got a free tee shirt after getting 2 jammers knocked into us on corner 2. (aaah, corner 2.)
+ Sunday beer run in Hudson.
+ Country Singles!
- Smoking indoors is still allowed in Milwaukee. Ew.
- Norske Nook closed when we drove through Osseo searching for pie.
Sometime in my Dairyland travels I need to see the Forevertron and the House on the Rock...

Date: 2009-03-17 03:20 am (UTC)The Bruisers were just okay when the Bombshells beat 'em in 2007, a month after winning the Golden Skate. Unless they have gotten immensely better, you should make short work of them.

Date: 2009-03-17 03:54 am (UTC)I'd guess you're right, but you never know, things change fast in the derby world! They had some impressive players and it'll be interesting to see where they are this summer.
The 2nd home bout was definitely stepped up speed and strategy-wise from the first one from both teams; I think we saw two weaker and two stronger teams playing each other, which was nice. But even the 2nd bout didn't use as much strategy as they could have- not much use of lead jam, very little forcing track cuts or pack splitting or running the clock and that kind of stuff.
