So s4 and I went downtown to Givens Violins this afternoon.

The cello is, according to them, worthless. They said with the money it'd take to fix it, I could get a better cello.) They didn't tell me specifically what was wrong with it, or how much it would cost to repair it, but I think it has a lot of gaps where it's coming apart that you can't really see.

Oh well. It was a fun fantasy for a couple days, and I'm no poorer save the parking meter (unless I want to take up ebay on one of many full cello outfits for under $200- but I guess I don't really trust those for some reason). Guess I'll stick to woodwinds for now.

I don't actually have any information on how you could acomplish this, but you should find an apprentice luthier who'd be willing to work on it for free, just for the practice. I know there's a major school for luthiers in Red Wing, so a lot of them end up in the cities after school. Either that or just start adding odd attachments and/or electronics to it until it does something cool.

Before you do anything, I still would like to take
a look at it...their estimate is more than likely correct...
but I'd like to see it anyways...

I'll call ya...

Cool. I would be willing to have a beater thing that I could hook pickups too and make noise with, if nothing else. For the time being, I put it back in the storage space it came from...
Cool idea, HK... maybe I'll check into it.

ooh ooh! you could mount it in a taxidermy-esque manner. it could be a neat art project meant to show the death of non-electronic music.

Even if it's not operable in the typical way, I'm positive you could make some neat sound on it if you tried. Perhaps not normal cello sounds, but it's worth being creative with.
Sorry it's not a workable cello...but if you ever want to borrow a violin, or a djembe or a bass or guitar or tambourine or something like that for your crazy musicness I can help you there.
Otherwise, if you're bored/have time/feel like it renting a cello costs like $50 bucks a month. I rented one for my sis once just for fun.

Thanks, lady! By the way, we *did* stop down to the Oakwood with the time left on our meter (probably not enough time for tea, but time to say hi...) except the buzzer box has no names and I didn't know the number. And then I called the numbers for you on the Bead's contact list, conveniently left in my wallet, and found nothing close to a Karlyn. Or even a real person. But I guess we get an E for effort, and you were probably at school anyway.

my phone has a scary answering machine message--scary automated guy--that's probably whatcha got. You do get an E for effort though. Sometime we should play with synthesizers!

You know what? Play it anyway. It won't be perfect but it will be unique, if you can do anything with it. Practice on it and see what it sounds like, and at least you're beginning to practice. Or is it completely unplayable in its current state? In which case, you have a great opportunity for some artistic resources. Who would desecrate a perfectly good cello just for art? But you can pretend you did.

The punks downstairs suggested I fill it with gasoline, light it, and throw it off a bridge. And to make sure I invited them if I did so. That's their answer for everything.

You'd have to invite a bunch of us if you did that, a bunch of us with cameras and videocameras. But yeah, that's also my idea for a practical joke whenever someone leaves the office, as something we can do to their personal office. My supervisor doesn't find that as clever as I do.

you could always just follow Will's philosophy -
"if it's empty, fill it with cream".
