Hrfm. Damn.

So s4 and I went downtown to Givens Violins this afternoon.

The cello is, according to them, worthless. They said with the money it'd take to fix it, I could get a better cello.) They didn't tell me specifically what was wrong with it, or how much it would cost to repair it, but I think it has a lot of gaps where it's coming apart that you can't really see.

Oh well. It was a fun fantasy for a couple days, and I'm no poorer save the parking meter (unless I want to take up ebay on one of many full cello outfits for under $200- but I guess I don't really trust those for some reason). Guess I'll stick to woodwinds for now.

I don't actually have any information on how you could acomplish this, but you should find an apprentice luthier who'd be willing to work on it for free, just for the practice. I know there's a major school for luthiers in Red Wing, so a lot of them end up in the cities after school. Either that or just start adding odd attachments and/or electronics to it until it does something cool.

Before you do anything, I still would like to take
a look at it...their estimate is more than likely correct...
but I'd like to see it anyways...

I'll call ya...

Cool. I would be willing to have a beater thing that I could hook pickups too and make noise with, if nothing else. For the time being, I put it back in the storage space it came from...
Cool idea, HK... maybe I'll check into it.

ooh ooh! you could mount it in a taxidermy-esque manner. it could be a neat art project meant to show the death of non-electronic music.

Even if it's not operable in the typical way, I'm positive you could make some neat sound on it if you tried. Perhaps not normal cello sounds, but it's worth being creative with.
Sorry it's not a workable cello...but if you ever want to borrow a violin, or a djembe or a bass or guitar or tambourine or something like that for your crazy musicness I can help you there.
Otherwise, if you're bored/have time/feel like it renting a cello costs like $50 bucks a month. I rented one for my sis once just for fun.

You know what? Play it anyway. It won't be perfect but it will be unique, if you can do anything with it. Practice on it and see what it sounds like, and at least you're beginning to practice. Or is it completely unplayable in its current state? In which case, you have a great opportunity for some artistic resources. Who would desecrate a perfectly good cello just for art? But you can pretend you did.
