My Grandma is funny.

At my family birthday/holiday party thing on Sunday, a long time friend of the family was there. He often joins us at family events and has been friends with my uncle since high school or before. He's well known for drinking a little more than he should, and he talked at length about his militia/huntin' buddies, and how he's taken his little son (probably about six or seven?) to the shooting range since he's been able to hold a gun. He proudly proclaimed (through some slurring) how he had purchased some huge shotgun stock for him as a Christmas present (the exact specifications I fail to remember). My family, none of them hunters and more likely to drive Hondas or Saturns before trucks, seem a little aghast, but good humored nonetheless. My Grandma, bless her, pipes up with:
"What the heck are you gonna get him when he turns 21, a tank?

Evidently I have some extended family like this. I've never met them, and my mom's only relatively recently reunited with them. They're on her side of the family, which is a little tragic since that's a reminder of how oppressive and thoughtless her 2nd-most recent husband, my evil-ex-step-father of whom I have so much to say, was. It was his priority that we associate with his extended family but mom's been effectively out of communication with these Montana folk for decades, but all the while they've been thinking of her. So she got a family reunion notice a few years ago and went and had a wonderful time, just amazed to see that they never forgot her and were so receptive of her.

But yeah, they're very redneck and I'd probably be alienated from them, though they have a gay relative somewhere in there and they're actually defensive on his behalf and accept him, so maybe it wouldn't be that bad. I'm curious about them.
