So, I've opted not to go to the Wisconsin decompression party this weekend. I'm kinda bummed, since I really want to go camping again before it's too cold, but I just went to Madison this past weekend already, there's tons of stuff going on this weekend that I don't want to miss, and, mainly, my coworker asked me to model in a fashion show for her at the History Center. I'd feel really awful not pulling this favor, as she got the brunt of my absence from Burning Man, she'll get it again when I go to DC, she's the reason I didn't have to come in for the weekend when the networking people came to set up the network, and she's going to be staying later on Friday so our office can be open for more of the Art Crawl. It's also a really fun dress, it's for a good cause (basically, our non-profit gets a few hundred bucks for participating), it's good publicity and it's nice to have two staff here involved. It also didn't hurt that she hit me up to be a model right after I was trying to wrangle a bunch of people to wear my clothes, so I was pretty sympathetic. It also didn't hurt that she thinks my hair would match and that my blue and black stripey tights would look really good with it. ;) So. Another fashion show within two weeks! for your amusement, here's a picture and blurb of what I'll be wearing:

The American Party Dress represents both the Fastfood nation and the devotees of recycling. Artist Kathleen Richert considers herself and her work as part of the tradition of Americans who, for generations, have created intricate works of art from discarded items.

This dress is made from 30 mylar snackfood packages. (No, she did not eat all those potato chips herself!) It is fully lined, zips up the back, and makes full use of the same dressmaking skills that Kathleen uses to design and construct the historically accurate clothing that more frequently emerge from her studio. She has built a reputation over time as a master of materials. In addition to many of the historical ensembles seen here at the History Center, Kathleen has made clothing out of chocolate, leafy greens, gummi worms, shellfish and citrus peel, among other things.

She describes it this way: "I am beguiled by a craft that women have engaged in for decades: plying a needle. I am seduced by the challenge of taking unassuming materials, using ordinary tools, and applying simple techniques and processes to create complex objects."

Should be fun. If anyone wants to go and see me in this thing, lemme know.

Edit: The designer would prefer that I wear red and white striped tights. I don't have any, strangely. If anyone has some they wouldn't mind lending me, lemme know.

Anyone can come- there are two shows on both Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 and 2:30. It's at the History Center in St. Paul. Kathleen tells me to warn people that parking might be tricky.
