WASTE doesn't seem to be very happy right now, so instead of a mass email, you get a livejounal entry!

I've decided I want a bunch of UV LEDs to build into my sculpture, and maybe some white ones, too. If I have some left over for Burning Man constructions, that'd be just fine with me... I'd like to order them next week, if possible. Anyone want to go in on a bulk order with me? They're generally cheaper the more you get. The cheapest ones I can find are at LEDsupply.com, and there's also superbrightleds.com, whose are more expensive, but brighter. I'm wanting to get at least 10-15 of them, probably more. LEDsupply also has things called "PowerPucks", which sound intriguing, especially for lighting a sculpture outside at Burning Man. Are they worth it? Are they that much better than plain batteries? Any thoughts from you kids who've done this more than me are appreciated.

oo oo oo! mememe!

my glofish only glow under uv, and my fluorescent blacklight purples up the water a bit too much. lemme take a look at those sites and get back to you with suggestions.

Yeah, let me know -- I'll probably take a half dozen of each, or maybe a dozen if they're cheap enough.

Okiedokie...

I'd be interested in getting whatever number is convenient to push the quantity over a handy threshold, in the neighborhood of ten or so. more, less, I'm easy. Don't want 50 though.

I'd recommend the superbrightleds site over the other; the price difference on UV leds isn't significant, and superbright publishes data sheets. Those "power pucks" could be anything from a fancy pulsed current-limited supply, to a resistor in series with the battery. who knows.

For power, you might consider getting bare circuit boards and making your own. LED driving is common and there are lots of things that do it in various ways. google for 'led driver circuit' and all sorts of wonderment pops up. DigiKey.com is a good source for other electronic components (and they're minnesotan.) I can go on and on about proper powering of LEDs if you're interested.

i want some! i would go for 10 to 20. at ledsupply it would be 30$ for 20 at superbrightled it would be 35$ for 20. i think the more you get the more the prices equalize.

anyway count me in!

I've ordered from this guy in the past. Order 2x what you need, about half of them tested bad. It was still a bargain at like 0.10/ea for superbright LEDs (or .20/ea for the good ones anyway) Dirt cheap!

Also, check Small bear Steve is awesome and I order from him all the time. Might not have UV LEDs tho.

Okay- I think I'm going to split the order and do the UV from superbrightleds.com (I just can't really trust a fuckload of UV leds from ebay for $15. I know the superbright ones work really well so I'm going to get at least 50 of those.) And then I'll also get 50 or 100 3mm white ones from the ebay site.

Sound good, everyone?
