WASTE doesn't seem to be very happy right now, so instead of a mass email, you get a livejounal entry!

I've decided I want a bunch of UV LEDs to build into my sculpture, and maybe some white ones, too. If I have some left over for Burning Man constructions, that'd be just fine with me... I'd like to order them next week, if possible. Anyone want to go in on a bulk order with me? They're generally cheaper the more you get. The cheapest ones I can find are at LEDsupply.com, and there's also superbrightleds.com, whose are more expensive, but brighter. I'm wanting to get at least 10-15 of them, probably more. LEDsupply also has things called "PowerPucks", which sound intriguing, especially for lighting a sculpture outside at Burning Man. Are they worth it? Are they that much better than plain batteries? Any thoughts from you kids who've done this more than me are appreciated.

Okiedokie...

I'd be interested in getting whatever number is convenient to push the quantity over a handy threshold, in the neighborhood of ten or so. more, less, I'm easy. Don't want 50 though.

I'd recommend the superbrightleds site over the other; the price difference on UV leds isn't significant, and superbright publishes data sheets. Those "power pucks" could be anything from a fancy pulsed current-limited supply, to a resistor in series with the battery. who knows.

For power, you might consider getting bare circuit boards and making your own. LED driving is common and there are lots of things that do it in various ways. google for 'led driver circuit' and all sorts of wonderment pops up. DigiKey.com is a good source for other electronic components (and they're minnesotan.) I can go on and on about proper powering of LEDs if you're interested.
